Data · August 2026
There is a story people tell themselves about independent fashion: that it is a luxury habit, that shopping outside the mall means paying designer prices. We have the data to check that story, so we did.
Naia's catalog currently holds 25,417 pieces from 312 emerging and independent brands, with real, current prices. Here is what they actually charge, as of August 2026.
The median piece from an emerging designer costs $131. Half of the entire catalog sits between $77 and $220. And the number that most directly contradicts the luxury story: 56% of all 25,417 pieces cost under $150, and 36% cost under $100.
Independent fashion is not priced like a runway. It is priced like a considered purchase, closer to premium high street than to designer retail.
Median prices across the twelve biggest categories:
| Category | Pieces | Typical range (middle half) | Median |
|---|---|---|---|
| Headwear | 204 | $50 – $111 | $71 |
| Swimwear | 210 | $62 – $93 | $76 |
| Jewelry | 2,716 | $60 – $194 | $100 |
| Tops | 4,509 | $80 – $160 | $115 |
| Accessories | 1,791 | $50 – $200 | $125 |
| Bottoms | 3,266 | $98 – $212 | $140 |
| Footwear | 303 | $111 – $220 | $157 |
| Dresses | 2,411 | $104 – $245 | $160 |
| Bags | 3,787 | $94 – $250 | $170 |
| Sweaters | 596 | $95 – $373 | $180 |
| Outerwear | 1,122 | $153 – $400 | $248 |
Two things stand out. First, the entry points: jewelry at a $100 median and tops at $115 are where most people can start buying independent without changing their budget. Second, outerwear is the one category with a genuinely higher floor, and it should be; coats are the most construction-intensive garment most people own.
Pieces made with visible hand-technique carry a premium over the $131 catalog median, but it is a modest one, not a multiple:
The pattern: labor-intensive technique adds roughly 30 to 50 percent at the median, and two of the most distinctive techniques, dyeing and crochet, add nothing at all. If you have been treating craft details as a signal that a piece is out of budget, the data says otherwise.
Every one of these 25,417 prices was set by a small team, often a single person, doing their own production math with no procurement department behind them. That 56% of what they make lands under $150 says something about who emerging designers are actually designing for. Not collectors. People getting dressed.
Method: live Naia catalog, August 14, 2026. All active pieces with listed prices (n = 25,417) across 312 brands. Medians are used throughout because a small number of high-priced statement pieces would distort averages. Category and technique labels come from Naia’s catalog taxonomy. We refresh these figures periodically; the date above is the reference point.
