These 1980s Safilo aviators embody Italian refinement with a subtle nod to the era’s effortless cool. The fine wire frame carries a sense of precision and lightness, while the softly tinted black lenses create a moody, cinematic presence. Designer: Safilo Frame Model: Unknown Lenses: Wire aviator, light black lenses Decade: 1980s Country of Origin: Italy Condition: Excellent vintage condition Historical Context Founded in Italy in 1878, Safilo is one of the oldest and most influential eyewear manufacturers in the world. The company began producing optical frames in the Dolomites, in the historic eyewear district around Calalzo di Cadore, and helped establish the region as a center of Italian frame production. Over the 20th century, Safilo grew from a manufacturer into a major force in the development, production, and distribution of eyewear internationally. Safilo’s history is particularly interesting because it sits behind so many different fashion labels. Rather than representing a single designer aesthetic, the company produced frames for a wide range of brands and helped translate changing fashion trends into eyewear—from the sculptural acetate and oversized silhouettes of the 1960s–70s to the technical, colorful, and highly branded styles of the 1980s–90s. For vintage collectors, “Made in Italy by Safilo” can be as historically significant as the fashion label on the frame itself. Safilo's manufacturing and licensing relationships connected Italian optical craftsmanship with some of the most important fashion houses of the 20th century, making its frames a useful record of how eyewear moved from a functional optical object into a major fashion accessory.
